I'M
Judge Michael Scott.
KING COUNTY
SUPERIOR COURT
ABOUT ME
A Commitment to Service
I was appointed to the King County Superior Court by Governor Jay Inslee after practicing with a Seattle law firm for over 35 years. In private practice I represented clients in cases involving securities litigation; patent, trademark, and copyright infringement; software quality disputes; employment discrimination and wrongful discharge; product liability; unfair competition and antitrust; real property and environmental litigation; and contract disputes. I also devoted substantial time to pro bono public interest matters, including significant civil rights cases.
I represented the plaintiffs in Ingersoll v. Arlene’s Flowers, where, in 2016, the Washington Supreme Court unanimously found that a florist violated Washington State’s anti-discrimination and consumer protection laws when she refused to sell flowers to a gay couple for their wedding. In its ruling, the Supreme Court quoted our brief: “We agree with Ingersoll and Freed that ‘[t]his case is no more about access to flowers than civil rights cases in the 1960s were about access to sandwiches.’” The holding of Arlene’s Flowers stands for the fundamental importance of the human dignity of every person. In recognition of our work on the Arlene’s Flowers case, I and the other members of my team received the King County Bar Association President's Award.
I believe the role of a judge is one of the highest callings in the legal profession. Judges play a critically important role in our government and society, and their decisions have profound effects on the lives of those who appear before them. Community and public service have long been important values and commitments in my life. That’s why I am deeply grateful to serve as a judge, where I can pursue my commitment to equal justice under law for everyone in our diverse society.
I strive to be a judge who is patient, respectful, studious, thoughtful, thorough, careful, empathetic, and fair in my decisions. I try to balance a firm control of the courtroom with a demeanor that encourages appropriate, meaningful participation in the judicial process. I endeavor to carefully explain my decisions. I do my best to promote access to justice for all.
My mother was from Yakima and my father from Hoquiam. They met at the University of Washington, where my dad was in the ROTC. After graduating from college my dad joined the Air Force. I was born in Houston, Texas. We moved around the world: Sacramento, California; Ankara, Turkey; Orlando, Florida; and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (7th-12th grades). After high school, I attended Stanford University, where I received a B.A. in political science and a B.S. in biological sciences. I then went on to receive my J.D. at Stanford Law School.

I have three children. My oldest daughter holds a master's degree in social work and is currently employed at a Spanish/English elementary school. My middle daughter is a family nurse practitioner at a community health center. And my youngest, my son, is a certified public accountant. My husband, Cullen Brady, is currently pursuing a master’s degree in the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs at UW.
